As part of my theme reflection of ideologies, I decided to reflect on the way I traditionally play my instrument. I chose to play along with a spiritual from the list of spirituals posted on moodle. The spiritual I chose, Ship of Zion, was my personal favorite and I reasoned that tasking myself with interpreting the piece in my own way would help me reflect upon the ideology around my playing. I had never played a spiritual before and it was truely a challenge to adjust my playing to fit the style. I had to reflect upon my instincts of how I might normally play resulted in a ad-libbed melodic style of playing where I often followed the main melody but occasionally riffed around.
